Neem Oil: The Natural Pesticide Every Plant Parent Needs
If you buy one plant-care product this year, make it neem oil. Pressed from the seeds of the neem tree — which grows all over Nigeria — it's a natural, broad-spectrum pesticide and fungicide that's safe around people and pets when used correctly.
What neem oil controls
Neem oil works against the most common Nigerian plant pests: aphids, mealybugs, whiteflies, spider mites, scale insects, and caterpillars. It also suppresses fungal problems like powdery mildew and leaf spot.
How to mix it
Neem oil doesn't mix with water on its own — you need a little soap as an emulsifier.
- 1 litre of warm water
- 1 teaspoon (5ml) of cold-pressed neem oil
- ½ teaspoon of mild liquid soap
- Shake well and use within 8 hours — the active compounds break down quickly
How to apply it
Spray in the early morning or evening, never in midday sun — oil plus hot sun burns leaves. Coat the undersides of leaves thoroughly; that's where pests hide. Repeat every 7–14 days until the infestation clears, then monthly as prevention.
Always test on one leaf first and wait 24 hours, especially on delicate plants.
What to look for when buying
Choose cold-pressed, 100% pure neem oil — it should be cloudy, brownish, and smell strongly of garlic and sulphur. Clear, odourless products have usually had the active ingredient (azadirachtin) removed. Agro-suppliers on FloraBase stock genuine cold-pressed neem oil.
